(9:00 AM – 11:30 AM) Disaster Preparedness and Workplace Safety

Presenter: Vicki Vander Zwart, MFC – PacificCare

Location:G-101

Description: Why prepare for disasters? Studies have shown that children and adults who have

experienced ongoing preparedness training are not only safer, but fare better emotionally.

There are steps you can take right now so that if disaster strikes, you will be better able to

take care of yourself and those around you.

The increase in violence in our society is spilling over into the workplace; many

employees are worried about their personal safety. What actions should they take if they

are threatened, abused or harassed? This program will give participants tools for

recognizing potentially threatening situations and ways in which they can make

themselves safer in the workplace.

(9:00 AM – 11:30 AM) Nutrition 101 and Healthy Cooking

Presenter: Healthy Adventures in conjunction with VEBA

Location: G-102

Description: This 2.5 hour workshop is devoted to informing participants on the basics of nutrition,

energy balance, healthy recipe substitutions, portion control and healthy eating on a

budget. Participants will then be able to put this knowledge to use in a healthy recipe for

them to enjoy. Bon appetit!

(9:00 AM – 11:30 AM) Stress Management and Circuit Training

Presenter: Healthy Adventures and VEBA

Location: G-107

Description: Is stress getting you down and affecting your health? This class will teach you the basics

about stress, how it impacts your health, and what you can do to change it. We will cover

stress management techniques, including guided imagery, contract/relax, deep breathing

techniques, yoga, Pilates, and a variety of exercise. This will be a physically active class,

so please wear loose clothing and athletic shoes. This class is appropriate for all levels of

physical activity.

(11:35 AM – 11:55 AM) Walking Break Around the Campus

Presenter: Healthy Adventures and VEBA

Location: Mesa Campus, Meets at G Building Courtyard

Description: Take a break from your conference to get in a physically active break. A health coach

will lead a walk around the campus and show you ways that you can get your exercise in

during your 15-minute breaks or during your lunch breaks from work. The healthy coach

will cover a variety of aerobic, resistance, and flexibility topics. This will be a casual

activity, appropriate for all levels of physical activity. Be sure to wear loose clothing and

athletic shoes and be ready to exercise.

(1:15 PM – 3:30 PM) Self-Management I - Time Management, Goal Setting, Self-esteem, and Positive Self-image

Description: You do your best when you feel your best! Learn techniques to create better mental and

emotional balance, maintain a positive perspective, and increase the quality of life. This

class will help you find your personal equilibrium to make life a little more relaxed, allow

you to feel more confident, empowered, and positive.

(1:15 PM – 3:30 PM) Self-Management II - Working with People, Team Building, and Conflict Resolution

Presenter: Healthy Adventures and VEBA

Location: G-107

Description: Conflict is a fact of life! If we manage it skillfully, it can be the source of growth and

productivity. In this section, we will discuss various approaches to conflict and analyze

the advantages and disadvantages of each. We are all unique individuals with our own

gifts, skills, concerns, and perspectives . These elements are part of what make us special,

but sometimes can set us apart from our co-workers . It’s important to find common

ground given our differences, and to strive to treat everyone with respect. This program

provides information, exercises and a video with vignettes demonstrating the different

learning points of the training program.

(1:15 PM - 3:30 PM) Know Your AFT Contract

Presenter: Jim Mahler, AFT President

Location: G-106

Description: Join AFT President Jim Mahler for a tutorial on understanding your contract. This session

will focus on your AFT Food Services, Office/Technical AND Maintenance and

Operations contracts. You will have an opportunity to ask questions, discuss your rights

and responsibilities, and walk away with a better understanding of your contract and your

collective bargaining rights.

(8:30 AM - 11:30 AM) Workplace Communication and Ethics - Are you Listening?

Presenter: Dan Vega

Location: G-106

Description: This three hour course will cover workplace ethics as well as familiarize you with many

considerations for effective communication. We spend much time “talking” with our

peers and supervisors, but how effective are we at exchanging information. We know we

are supposed to “do the right thing” but are we and those around us really conducting

ourselves ethically? This course is presented in a discussion/dialogue format. The

facilitator will pose thought provoking questions to promote enlightening dialogue.

(8:30 AM – 12:00 PM) Adult CPR with AED Certification

Presenter: Healthy Adventures and VEBA

Location: L-501/502

Description: This course teaches you the basic steps in recognizing emergencies and responding with

the appropriate life saving actions. You will learn the proper steps to assess an

emergency and intervene without risk to yourself or further injury to the victim. Taking a

certification class for CPR/AED will teach you to perform immediate actions to care for a

victim during a cardiac emergency.

[This course is designed to be taken in combination with First Aid Certification]

(11:35 AM – 1:15 PM) Biometric Screenings

Presenter: Healthy Adventures and VEBA

Location: F-104

Description: Do you want to know where you stand in comparison to the recommended levels for a

variety of health measures? Come on out and we will measure your respirations, heart

rate, blood pressure, girth measurements, waist-to-hip ration, height, weight, body mass

index (BMI), and body fat. Once your measurements are taken, within a week, a health

coach will call you for a free confidential analysis on your numbers compared to the

recommended levels. You will also receive a follow-up email highlighting the results and

where to go from here. This is a $75 value, absolutely free and confidential

(1:15 PM – 3:30 PM) First Aid Certification

Presenter: Healthy Adventures and VEBA

Location: L-501/502

Description: This course teaches you the basic assessments and interventions that can be performed to

an injured person until more advance care can be provided. The knowledge you receive

in this course will allow you to treat an injury with little or no medical equipment. You

will also learn steps you can implement to decrease the likelihood of an incident

occurring and improve your confidence to react to an emergency situation.

[This course is designed to be taken in combination with Adult CPR with AED

Certification] Seating is limited.
